Though the stranger isn’t in town any more, neither Lum or Abner want to keep the diamond at their place. Lum regrets ever buying the diamond in the first place, even if he did get a bargain on it. The diamond seems to almost be alive, with the way the curse on it haunts Lum.
Abner gets confused over what Lum means. Is there a ghost? If Lum can’t see the thing that bothers him over the diamond, then what else is it? Lum bounces between liking the fortune of the diamond, and its value in paying off their mortgages, and worries over the curse. Have the gents come up with a way to keep the diamond safe?
Grandpap enters, wanting to pick up some pepper, and have it -put on his bill. He may be a special friend, but not special enough to extend credit, even if the gents had pepper to sell. A reminder of the curse comes crashing through the store after grandpap leaves.
