A man of the upper crust, Worthington Potter, has trouble with his stock broker and has extended himself playing the stocks with other peoples money. In a desperate measure he raids Alfea’s safe deposit box, trying to find something he can turn into a quick $10K in cash. A rare antique earring, with it’s mate missing just might prove to be valuable enough to bail himout.
All of Worthingtons social standing, his reputation, and wealth all stand on a token of his proposal of marriage to Alfea. She confesses to him that she has a heart condition, and her doctor is worried that Worthington is only after her money. When she produces the rare earring, and confronts Worthington about his underhanded deed, he panics and kills her, blaming the death on her weak heart. With all her estate at his disposal, at least for a little while, Worthington has to work fast and leverage as money as he can to sink into the stock market.
The thing he doesn’t realize is that the earring that he believes is the mate of the one he pawned, making the set worth a hundred times much more, is the one he sold. After tracing its origin, Worthington is ready to commit suicide to end all his worldly troubles. Is it the long lost earring, or not? The Whistler holds the strange ending to this twisted tale of desperation that you won’t want to miss.
