The hunger strike is taking its toll on Abner and his will power. After three days, he is wasting away, and has a card from Ed Beckley’s drugstore scale to prove it. It’s easy for Lum to talk, and his encouragement only frustrates the starving Abner all the more.
Lum is sure Lizabeth is good and worried over the gaunt appearance of her husband. Has she even heard he has been on a hunger strike? Abner isn’t so sure, but Lum claims to have been hinting to the rumor mill.
Across the street, the gents see Lizabeth talking with Dick Huddleston and sister Simpson. It’s Abner’s big break to do some menial work out front of the Jot Em Down store, and let his woman see how he’s pining away for her. Grandpap enters to comment to Lum about the happenings outside. How is Lizabeth responding? A phone call reveals what’s in store for Abner.
