Mary and Don tells Jack about zombies. Frank Nelson is a reporter who wants to get the scoop on the contest that was mentioned last week. Will Jack actually give away $10k? Is his stingy behavior just a gag for the show? Phil enters to keep the discussion of the contest going, but nobody seems to know much about it. Still, the jokes on money and stinginess abound.
Phil gets a phone call from home and we learn a few secrets about his homelife. Cute. Phil plays, Just Beyond the Rainbow. Everybody is chomping at the bit to learn more about the contest, even the telephone operators. The gossiping gals share secrets about Jack’s lovelife. Rochester checks in with troubles about the milkman.
The publicity agent, Steve Bradley shows up, and the contest is revealed. It’s the I Hate Jack Benny Because… contest. What? Doesn’t everybody like Jack? According to the agent there could be as many as 1000 million people who don’t listen, and thus don’t like Jack. Do you think people can get it all in with 25 words or less? If Jack has his way, the people could send in their entries on dollar bills. It’s a real contest, so stay tuned. Prizes will be given in the form of Victory Bonds. , and Fred Allen will be the judge.
Note: In the episode Jack claims that his rivalry with Fred Allen goes back to their vaudeville days. It actually began less than 10 years earlier. The girl who phones Phil is actually an actress, and though she isn’t named, she is supposed to be little Alice. Jack and Mary get flustered, and flub lines in Dons commercial.
