Absorbed in yet another problem of the merchant, Abner is on the phone with Mrs Pomeroy. He can’t help her problem of not having enough ration points for canned goods. When Lum enters, he sympathizes, and tells about his plans to run on the next school board. He’s willing to make the sacrifice to be on the board, in hopes the board will see fit to elect him as school board president.
Abner gets confused over Lum’s humility over pretending to not be so interested in the office. Is Lum sick? Should he go see a doctor?
Lum is sure the publick’s mind is made up, and his chances are a shoe in. Abner gets confused over Lum’s ability to walk around town with his ear to the ground. If that’s what it takes to be aware of what people in town are saying, Abner doesn’t want to give it a try, walking all bent over like that.
A phone call from Lizabeth could enlighten Lum about what the public has to say about electing Lum. Just what does the petition say? Cedric enters to confirm when he also brings one into the store.
