An elderly farmer, John Henderson has married a younger woman, and left the care of the farm to his eccentric son. There’s nothing but bad blood between the son, and his new mom, but is Martha really trying to run him off, and stand to inherit the farm? If young Matt leaves, and with wartime labor demands causing a bind, the farm will only continue a decline into a shabby condition.

Local man, Henry pitches in on the farm, and things get turned around. His days are short, since he is only home while on leave from military service. How will old John take it when Matt catches the two kissing? If push come to shove, whose side of the incriminating scene will dad believe? Henry and Martha seem to know, and talk over plans to handle Matt.

A purchase from town, including rat poison is picked up by Matt, but will he be the fall guy for a murder? A visit from the sheriff begins the investigation of the untimely stroke of old John. Details of who made, and served his last meal are reviewed in great pains to determine whether Matthew is telling the truth. Time goes by, the trial Is over, and something has been weighing heavily on Henry’s mind.
