Doc and Matt marvel at the sight of the fancy Surrey coming down the street, especially when Miss Kitty is the passenger. The driver is a reporter from New York, and seeking the kind of juicy stories that made Ned Buntline famous. Is that so wrong? To be famous? Matt figures it depends on how you got that way.
On the range, Matt and Chester encounter a battle weary cavalry troop. What made one of the most peaceful Indian chiefs on the plains go on the warpath? A burial ground could hold answers, or maybe raise more questions.
Back in Dodge, though he’s adverse to talking with the writers, Matt does so as a favor to Kitty. Their morbid request for tales of Indian raids, and the artifact that has come from an Indian grave only serves to get Matt riled. Taking the matter to the Army post, Matt’s mystery grows.
In town, Matt learns the writers have flown the coup, but only for a little while. They’ve just returned with the most exciting story they witnessed of a real live fight between the army and Indians. Don’t they realize the cost in human lives, for the sake of simply getting a story? Matt decides to give them something to write about as he runs them out of Dodge.
