Its morning in the Anderson home, and Jim is particularly frisky when he greets Margret with a kiss. Though Bud interrupts, at least its for a good cause, highway safety. Though its a pet topic of the show, Betty’s drama over her best friend, Jenny Liggit, means Bud has to shove aside his troubles.
Jim’s mood is put to the test when Margret has to break the news of a ladies meeting with the Red Cross, but who is going to drive her? Why not have one of the kids do it? Even Cathy thinks she would be glad to drive. Jim thinks its about time Margret should learn to get behind the wheel, but she feels she’s too old to learn such new tricks. She only agrees, if he promises to teach her. Hmmm… something about this sounds like a set up that was planned.
Out in the car, and pressed with a deadline, the whole family offer back seat driving tips for Jim and Margret. Bud’s safety contest seems to have him fixated on winning a motor scooter. If Jim didn’t already have enough distractions with Betty’s drama, and Cathy wanting to see wild flowers, he has to start with the simple instruction of how to start the car.
The concept of shifting gears and working the pedals are confusing enough, but the car hasn’t even left the driveway yet. Now for the big test, let’s go through the ordeal with the motor running. At least mom has the steering part down… if only she was on the other side of the street. Every good thing must come to an end, but how does Margret do with braking?
