Phinus arrives with news of helping out the Clarks as the old couple squabble. The discussion moves to the topic for women to fill jobs in the work place. In these war time days, with shortages of men, its a necessity.
Abner thinks women folk are too pretty and dainty things to handle real work. They ought to stay home and chop wood, work the field, and that kind of stuff, women’s work. Lum on the other hand, thinks its their patriotic duty to meet the call to work in defense plants.
The use of Old Edwards sayings get Abner riled up over who wears the britches. Doesn’t Mrs Clark haie money for a new dress? Is her husband beating her? Can Lum tame the wild, run away imagination before Abner gets into a fight? Phinus is all for joining the fray, but a phone call that Lum makes could resolve the matter.
