As they ride the range, Matt and Chester stop in at a ranch. word on the prairie is that old top is selling the place, and Matt checks to see that nobody is trying to cheat the eccentric old gent.
Arriving back in Dodge, Matt has a few friendly words of bickering with Doc on the way to the Long Branch. Matt finds that a buyer from Kansas City is talking business with old Top, but Matt begins to smell a rat as details of the deal emerge. Matt meets Kitty on the street, and one of her friends from her early days. The peaceful day is disturbed by a ruckus at the bank. what’s it all about?
Matt tries to untangle the matter. Rutman claims that he doesn’t want the ranch, but the money and deed has changed hands. Is the Kansas City slicker trying to pull a fast one? How could Top have ridden 150 miles to the ranch and back in a day? Especially when he left after the Kansas City buyer? Old Top pulls off a little swindle of his own, but it’s just to protect himself from being cheated. It looks like Matt didn’t have to worry about his old friend after all.
