Guarding the store, Lum and Abner took up baseball bats, and arms to protect their owl from intruders. In the morning Abner tells grandpap about his accident of hitting Lum with his baseball bat. Lum doesn’t know who hit him, and Abner tells how he had Mousey’s help to carry their unconscious friend to the feed room to rest.
Checking on Lum, Abner and grandpap hear the story from Lum’s perspective. Feeling like he’s about to die, Lum needs Abner to tell him how many guys jumped on him. He must have been hit with an anvil. Why didn’t the gang hit Abner? Did Abner get in any good licks?
Lum still feels like he could die, and demands to get doc Miller to examine him. He feels like Abner doesn’t care, not phoning the doc sooner, and mistaking the brush offs about identifying any gang members for apathy. Just what would Lum do to his pal if he learned who really slugged him? Good thing doc Miller is on the way now.
