The rift between grandpap an Lum is settled… more or less. Today we find Lum composing a letter to request a book. Is it a story that stole from Little Red Riding Hood? Abner’s imagination runs wild, and wonders if a wolf is involved. Can he hire little Red to work in the store? Lum hasn’t been much help lately. Abner proceeds to tell the story in his own words, but Lum tries to tell him his letter has nothing to do with that.
He’s interested in a book about joining the navy, especially a new branch that’s being formed up. It’s a new outfit called the Waves. Does he meet the age restrictions? He’s older than 45, the maximum for being an officer.
The many jobs include
- Control Tower Operator. Can Lum direct big bombers?
- Radio Operator, which also includes decyphering codes, but Lum figures it’s mostly about operating radios. He may even take his own radio to be sure he can run it
- Heliographer Mate. It has something to do with the weather. Between the almanac, and his corns, Lum ought to do well.
As the gents get excited about the pay and uniforms, a phone call reveals that the Waves is the new branch just for girls to join.
