After the split with Lum taking over the movie theater, and Abner taking over the store, Cedric enters. He tells what Abner already fears, he made a big mistake in splitting the partnership. Cedric only makes Abner’s feelings all the more worse. Where will he get help to run the store. Everybody in town already has more work than they can handle.
Even Cedric’s lowly position in town looks like he has more opportunity to succeed in life than Abner does. Cedric isn’t interested in becoming a partner, or owning the store outright. His main worry is having letters of recommendation, but Abner his willing too let such things slide between friends.
What Cedric really means is that he wants references on Abner, if he expects to work for him. Can he trust Abner’s recommendations? How will he know what kind of character Abner has, unless he can come up wit five references?
