A serious setback in their legal case came when Abner broke into Squires house. Lum has to explain the agreement that Squire tricked Abner into signing. It hurts the case, and Abner frets over how he can’t seem to do anything right. He feels like he ought to suicide himself
Lum tries to keep Abner from leaping before he looks. A figure of speech that gets Abner confused. Should he do better at planning how he’ll jump into the mill pond? Or out of the way of that mule down at Caleb’s black smith shop before it kicks him?
A stranger claiming to be a lawyer from the county seat arrives. He asks about Squires injury. Lum does the talking, so Abner won’t get them in more trouble. Abner is shushed when he tries to but in, but it’s too late. Lum has already provided sensitive information to Squire’s lawyer.
