Visiting the prison, Philip meets the worden. William Arthur Senero is to be put to death, and Marlowe is on hand for one last visit with his friend from the streets. Can Marlowe prove the condemned man is innocent, and do it before the clock ticks any closer to the last moment? Its the warden’s job to follow the red tape, and procedures, but it doesn’t mean he isn’t on the kids side.
Details of the crime are recounted to Philip. Will getting the jewels back to their rightful owner set Billy free? Maybe not, but he wants to set things right on that score. Philip hits the streets with plenty to go on. Shady characters, dames, and dead bodies litter the trail for Marlowe. Who has the jewels, or knows where they are? Finding out could turn into a deadly game.
Its off to the water front where the guns come out. The tables turn for Marlowe at the pistol point of the dame. Taking advantage of a crash course for disaster, Philip solves the mystery, even if there’s little hope for Billy, his last moments can be in knowing he did something right.
