Life continues to settle into it’s normal routine. In the Jot Em Down store, Lum, Abner, and grandpap discuss the opening of school, and school supplies for Mary. A problem due to having paper shortages. Lum seeks reelection to the school board, claiming it’s not for personal gain, but to benefit the scholars.
To ensure his bid for the school board, Lum thinks he ought to run a campaign. With all the usual returning members, the only real factor to be concerned about is Caleb Wehandt. The mention of a campaign pitch gets Abner confused. Is Lum planning to play cards, or pitch horse shoes with Caleb? Maybe a foot race.
Abner imagines how he might help Lum win that race. Lum just isn’t the athlete he once was, and a good rub down with ligament might be called for. Maybe a guessing game, like picking a number between 1 and a thousand. Why not call Caleb right now to see what he guesses?
