Returning from making deliveries, Abner learns Lum’s latest frustration. Caleb wants the scholars to learn practical things on top of their book learning. Barn painting, barbering, horse shoeing, and more. Caleb’s idea is to have townsfolk do the teaching, so it shouldn’t add to the cost of education.
Everybody loves the idea, except for Lum. Even Abner sees the merits of it. Feeling betrayed, Lum’s quote gets Abner confused. Et tu Brutus… is Lum planning on having something to eat? What!? Does it have something to do with somebody getting killed? Call Henry Lunsford, the town constable ought to know about this!
Maybe it has to do with a dog that was stabbed, or poisoned, or what was that saying again? Grandpap enters to hear about Abner’s confused story, but it’s doubtful he can clear matters up.
