Forgery Detail. Someone is writing bad checks, and it’s up to Joe Friday to get them.
Checking in at home, Joe’s mom is pleased to see him. Why doesn’t he wear his policeman’s uniform any more? She shares the neighborhood gossip over a cup of coffee. Will Mrs Fowler do any good in playing matchmaker for Joe? A phone call from Ben Romero gets the show back on the track of the check forger.
In the police station, the cops discuss the trouble check forgers cause even with small amounts, especially with the small businesses they target. Handwriting analysis determines all the checks are from the same forger. The same mug shot keeps being identified, but is he really the right man?
Days of leg work whittle down a list of 30 suspects down to three. An observant store owner, and helpful clerk may provide the connection Joe needs to wrap this case up. The ball rolls fast along the trail of clues, and the forger has more dirty dealing on the side to worry about. The crook gets away, but leaves a goodbye note on a blank check. Joe is put on the spot with his mom. Isn’t he coming home to meet up with Genevieve?
