Regardless of how they feel, or how much trouble it may lead them in, Lum and Abner know they can’t hand Elly over to the authorities to go back to the orphanage. Though Lum puts up a front, he pretends to help with the hunt for Elly as he hides her out. Here comes Mousey. Will the secret begin to be troublesome to keep from him?
With his deliveries done for the day, Lum suggests that Mousey might want to look for work at the defense plant. He could get back into his old job as a night watchman. It’s a chore to keep Mousey from getting his coat and things from the feed room, but Lum manages it.
The task at hand is to whisk Elly out of town, and send the industrious girl to some of Lum’s kin in Wisconsin. Plans are made to sneak her out of town in the morning, and clear things for her at the state home. First grandpap enters to complicate matters. Is he on to the fact of where Elly is hiding?
