After hiding the run away girl, Ellie Conners, Lum has been working up blisters on his feet, pretending to help the police in their search. He feels bad for hiding the evidence, but he can’t help but shelter the girl. He knows the right thing to do is take Ellie back to the state orphanage, but he just can’t do it.
Meanwhile, Abner tells about how hard a worker Ellie is, and all that has been done in the sore. Ellie enters to get better acquainted with Lum, and soften him up to keep him from turning her in. The more the gents get to know the girl, the better they like her. If they keep getting more attached to her, neither of them will be able to break the news that she has to go back to the state home.
Ellie has a charm about her that melts the hearts of Lum and Abner. The distractions manage to find more excuses to at least put off for another the day of having to turn her in.
