As Mr Crane from the school newspaper interviews the Halls, he gets some hot tips on picking the World Series winner in baseball this year. Later, a letter about a donation to the campus comes. It’s from Mrs Whitney, and besides wanting to pay for finishing a building project, she insists on erecting one of her famously ugly statues. This calls for a meeting of the board of regents to approve of the situation. Toddy isn’t willing to compromise if the statue is insisted upon. At least, not without seeing it first.
For now, thoughts of ugly statues are put aside, and the Halls relive a few moments of their courtship back in England. The regents gather and do a little good natured, upper crust bickering among themselves. Will the statue be presentable? Will they decide to finish building the new gym? Toddy has his work cut out for him to be tactful as he declines the offer, and not offend anybody.
Note: in the show, Merryweather, normally played by Willard Waterman, is said to be called away and his twin brother will stand in for him. His brother is played by Gale Gordon. In the pilot episode, it was Gale Gordon who played the part of William Toddhunter Hall.
