Working homicide detail, Joe Friday has to put a stop to a deranged killer. Getting home just after 2AM, Joe wakes his mother who complains about his odd hours. They discuss the killer who has been posing as a policeman. Before Joe can go to bed, a call comes in to call him back on duty. The killer has struck again.
A dragnet of police on foot walk through the brush. Is the suspect caught in their trap? Checks are made from house to house. A stolen car provides an escape route, and the search shifts gears. A desperate criminal crashes into Joe and Ben, putting them both in the hospital.
With Ben still layed up, Joe goes on a stakeout with a police woman, who asks if he’ll go dancing with her sometime. The social chat with Dorothy is cut short when a burglar is picked up, but is he their man? Kirby seems to fill the bill, but he hasn’t finished giving the cops a run for their money.
A trail of beaten and brutalized victims are in the wake of the escaped Kirby. The case is back where it started, as Joe Friday gives the voiceover of the renewed chase. Back home in the wee hours of the morning, Joe’s mother once again frets over her overworked and under fed son. Maybe Joe can finally relax… and maybe even dig out his old tuxedo. You know… for that dance with Dorothy.
