In our last episode, Buck was in danger of suffocating after the initial disaster of unveiling the mechanical mole.
Today Buck is back to health and in Doctor Huers lab with Wilma Dearing. Doc describes the technology behind how the mole uses heat rays to melt it’s way through solid rock and move forward. Inside the cockpit of the mole, Wilma asks about all the controls and features. Disturbing word suddenly arrives, but it’s just a scheme of Black Barney just wanting to snoop around and have a look at the mechanical mole. Buck decides to pull a prank on him, then our heros get busy on making their start on their underground adventure.
The heat rays need some work in keeping the solid granite melted, but when the mole enters a pocket of natural gas, those heat rays are like holding a lit match over an open gas tank. Oopsie, I think that doc needed to have thought things through a little better. Will Buck and his friends be blown to bits? The answer comes in the next thrilling installment.
PS: When talking about Black Barney’s spy camera that is being used, storing video images on a wire, is much the same technology behind what makes a photo copier work. It would be a neat trick though for use in a practical camera. Not to mention that by the 25th century, digital technology will likely have been perfected, and become obsolete, and some new storage format will be in affect.
