The insurance investigation for Johnny involves not the criminal with the goods, but the victim. It’s off to prison to interview the death row inmate to try to locate the beneficiary of the insurance policy. The character of Pearl’s mother is doubtful, but that’s not Johnny’s trouble, all he needs to do is find her for the pay out. Where would you start? Johnny goes to the last known residence, and traces the steps as far as he can. With the killer firmly behind bars, why would Pearl Carrassa’s mom be hiding out?
Finding himself in Las Vegas, Johnny has a clash with a tough guy, and is rewarded with a thump on the head.
A wealthy family is found who doesn’t seem to need the $5000 that Johnny has been trying to deliver, but other troubles involving narcotics smuggling is uncovered. The drugs are still of no interest to Johnny and his purposes, but it could explain the mystery behind the hiding and secrecy.
If the family is less than needy, then why was the insurance policy be taken out? There seems to be some odd undercurrents with the disfunctional family. The story ends with some twists that come as a surprise, but if you think about it, the events really aren’t so surprising.
