Walter learns the Zan are holding him captive, but are amenable enough to accommodate him, and make the anthropologist comfortable. He also discovers he is to be an exhibit of a zoo.
A problem arises when some of the animals on display die off. Death is a curious mystery to the Zan, who live to be centuries old or more. Is Walter doing this? How can he describe the concept of death to the long lived aliens?
What self respecting zoo wouldn’t want to observe mating habits? Walter is introduced to a female counterpart,, and together share experiences of their captors, and how they survived. Will the two find a way to defeat the superior alien race? Is there hope for the human race to continue?
