The fictitious candidate for the hand of Lum, Mable Melrose, is gaining votes. Her backstory is convincing enough to sway voters in the contest to raise money for war bonds, and get Pine Ridge’s top bachelor married off.
Commenting on how riled up widow Abernathy and Sister Simpson would be with the other, if one of them got Lum, Abner gives Lum an idea. Should they sell tickets to watch the two biddies duke it out with each other? Lum has a better idea. He wants to start a gossip campaign to imply that Sister Simpson is a shoe in, and widow Abernathy doesn’t stand a chance.
With strict instructions to Mrs Barton to not leak the rumor, the gents eavesdrop on the party line. Does Lum know the psychology of a woman’s mind? Will he be leading them right where he wants them? So far, it seems to be going Lum’s way. A last moment phone call may tip the balance on the scales in an unexpected direction for Lum.
