Ever since Abner predicted both sister Simpson, and the widow Abernathy would marry Lum, they have been in hot pursuit. Lum’s existence has become miserable, and tells Abner to never mention their names to him. Turning attentions to the next war bond drive, the gents try to study up a contest to spark interest in the citizens of Pine Ridge to buy more bonds.
Curiosity wins out, and Abner ventures to ask Lum how his dinner went with the two ladies. Though he grumbles, Lum can’t help but tell all about his horrible ordeal. The dinner was fine enough, but the competition to get close to Lum is hilariously awkward to Abner as he hears the account.
As they return to studying up on meeting their bond quota, Cedric enters. By now the whole town knows of the race to romance with Lum. The embarrassment is in the open, but will Lum have to go join the Navy? Will grandpap enter with some winning advice for Lum? A phone call from US Quincey sparks a solution, and Abner has his contest idea.
