Details of a murder come to the office of Nero Wolfe. Revenge seems the clear motive for the murder, but the man who is blamed claims that it’s all lies. Time is of the essence, so Archie Goodwin is sent out to do the foot work in gathering clues, talking to the hot dames, and checking on timelines of where everyone involved in the crime was located.
Lies abound in the attempt to clear the air over Tom Wilcox. A missing pistol, and threats if Archie doesn’t quit the case only serve to amuse Nero. Does a cover up mean a love affair is at the core of the matter? As Archie combs the scene for clues, gun shots seem to make good on those threats.
Nero is sure there’s hidden clues, like a love letter. Where else would you keep hot steamy love letters? In the ice box, of course. There’s plenty to make the motive clear, and more. Dangers, and thumps on the head aren’t over, but it’s time for Nero to gather the players together for the big reveal.
