As we wait for word on the report on the synthetic rubber, Lum enters the store with a hat box. What’s really in it? For the land sakes! It’s a hat!
Lum figures he needs it since he’s going to be one of the most important fellows in the county. He might even be appointed to a position in the cabinet in government, a point that confuses Abner.
Word comes that a letter is on the way with Cedric. Meanwhile, Lum models his hat, which Abner thinks is too big. Cedric agrees with Abner, that the hat is too big, and has two letters to deliver. The rubber compound is deemed unusable, but the complicated scientific terms to describe it confuses Abner. The best use for it would be for road tar. On top of the let down, Lum is saddled with a $21 bill for the lab work.
What about the other letter? Lum is too disappointed to read it, but he perks up when he finds out he has been appointed to a county position. Abner remarks that the oversized hat now seems to fit Lum’s head a lot better.
