Reputations are at stake, and Doc Hall has the unpleasant duties of confronting a student charged with theft. What should be done to take disciplinary action?
Besides the shame of being accused, it isn’t clear whether the student actually stole anything. Since this is the same student who is the gangster’s son, the matter is particularly touchy. The publicity in the newspaper would ruin the student, even if he is innocent. Time to play detective, and see if names can be cleared, and a scandal nipped in the bud. There’s almost no time for sentimental flashbacks, but time for a lesson in not jumping to conclusions.
