As the fleet circles Mars, the flagship, Discovery lands on the surface of Mars. The landing craft has a rough time, and there’s a loss of control. Still, everybody emerges just fine, although after six months in zero gravity they have to get used to it’s affects.
They’ve landed at the polar ice cap, and get ready to take their first steps onto Mars. Radio links back to Erth share the good news of the first Mars landing. After the celebrations are over, the expedition to explore towards the equator begins.
It starts with taking simple weather readings from outside the ship. The crew inside the space ship prepares to get the balloons ready, but the patrol that had left earlier is way overdue.
It is determined they have been walking in the wrong direction, but are they? It’s hard to tell in the heavy fog, but the companion ship confirms they are no where near. Jet reports seeing a strange, warm light. If they can’t be brought back soon, they stand the chance of freezing to death in the bitter cold Martian night.
