A music filled story that starts in the Barbary Coast of 1900 San Fransisco. Robert Young and Alice Faye sing the title song, Hello Frisco Hello. Johnny and Trudy are a hit with the people, but not with the salloon owners. Johnny has dreams to strike it big, but his tiny troop of entertainers are on the brink of splitting up. To disrupt Sharkie’s business, Trudy sings, By the Mill. The troupe soon gathers steam, but a high society dame could rock the boat for the ever loyal Trudy.
The high society party isn’t their style, and could drive a wedge deeper between Johnny and Trudy. Johnny flirts, while Trudy sings, You’ll Never Know How Much I Love You. More determined than ever, Johnny wants to break through the invisible wall that separates the coast from high society on the hill. Trudy is the bread and butter of the troupe, but will Johnny return her love? She sings, They Always Pick On Me.
Maybe if she had her own high society guy to promote her, and Johnny’s girl went bankrupt, would he finally get what he wants? Is Johnny’s wealth driving him up the hill of success, only to lose his high class dame? Crisis sets in when Trudy sails for London with a new promoter, and Bridgette comes back for Johnny. Success is in store for Johnny and Trudy, but Johnny may have to learn the hard way that wealth doesn’t buy love or loyalty.
Everybody seems to have found love, while Johnny has slid back down the hill. Trudy reprises her song, You’ll Never Know. Will Johnny finally get it? Or will he just be a big weenie, and refuse help from anybody? Let’s just say they reprise the opening song together.
