Samples of the synthetic rubber need to be sent off to the government office at the county seat… as soon as ggrandpap can make some. Meanwhile, Lum is concerned about keeping the formula safe, refusing to even let it be written down. Grandpap has it sealed in his head, and nobody else knows what it is.
Lum worries that grandpap is late, and there’s nobody who can start mixing up a new batch of rubber. Has the body guard failed at his job? Are spies torturing a kidnapped grandpap? A phone call reveals that grandpap has been at Dick Huddleston’s store, arguing over what ration stamps he needs for a new pair of shoes.
The cold, and icy day presents a danger when grandpap approaches the Jot Em Down store. A slip on the ice, a bump on the head, and the old gent can’t remember who he is. As grandpap warms up near the wood stove, Abner gets the rubber production geared up. Reality sinks in for Lum and Abner when they come to understand that grandpap doesn’t even know his name, let alone a rubber formula.
