England 1885, and a letter that means changed lives for many, but the death of one. A grand old dame about town crosses paths with a young bank teller who comes to her with money troubles. She is in need of household help, and intrigued enough to help out the young relatives of the teller. Conflict arises between the young women, and the old benefactor. Will they be able to rise from the ranks of the low income, to the true heights of their potential?
Determination and resolve to make good set the stage for desperate plans. The sisters make plans to ensure they won’t set foot in a poorhouse. Albert has lost his job, and has to stay a step ahead of the authorities until he can make a clean break to America. How will this rock the boat for his cousins? Uncovering a little scandal, Albert decides to quietly do a little blackmailing.
With the old dame murdered, the younger Ellen and the girls carry on in running household affairs. Losing a little nerve, and fearing that Albert has caught on, a guilty conscience wears on Ellen. Will justice be done for the misdeeds in the story, while protecting the innocent and defenseless?
