The article about their failed trip to Mars has been sent off to the magazine editor, and its back to business as usual in the Jot Em Down store. Abner takes orders over the phone. The discussion turns to how the citizens of Pine Ridge need to conserve, stop hoarding, and abide by the new rationing program.
Returning from the county seat, Lum has their money from the article, but after doing the patriotic thing, which he reviews with Abner, there isn’t much left. The bills are paid, war bonds bought, support for the Red Cross donated, and the nice pair of leather shoes Lum picked up leave nothing else. He even bought Abner some nice ear muffs and brand new suspenders.
A family in town is down and out. The wife visits, possibly the first time a woman’s voice has been heard on the show, but she can’t afford to buy the things she needs. Soft hearted Lum and Abner not only donate the box of groceries, but give up their nice, new shoes, ear muffs, and suspenders to help out. For Lum and Abner, its not charity, its just businesses usual to lend a hand.
