To impress the boss, Jim Andersen decides to build a brick barbecue pit to cook steaks. Margret thinks its a bad idea, since November is too chilly for cook outs. Bud thinks its a bad idea, because he’s stuck with doing most of the work in laying bricks. Cathy is enjoying reading the instructions, despite her questions about what they mean.
Troubles begin to reveal themselves when Betty gets dramatic over having the barbecue plans clashing with a party she had planned for her teen age friends. Then there’s the matter of a stuck page as Cathy read the instructions. Is this a barbecue pit, or a giant bird bath?
The cook out gets worse as a smoky disaster. Is Jim sure the boss will like to eat hot steaks outside on a cold November day? Betty’s party is a hit, and as far as she’s concerned its because she has forbid any of the family to join in. Will it still be a hit when Bud and Cathy come home early? How about if the boss crashes the teeny-bopper bash? At least she becomes a gracious hostess for the whole gang.
