After riding herd over at Smoke Falls, Britt rides into town, and the doc ropes him into standing in for an important civic duty. There is to be an election, and Britt turns down the request to oversee it. Until a representative from one of the parties tries to put on pressure. It’s enough to convince Britt to take part anyway.
The Cotton brothers are trying to win the election by corrupt means. Doc gets excited, and claims that Britt is campaigning for the side of the honest sheriff. All Britt wants to do is remain impartial and let folks decide without any outside pressure.
Being a neutral party, Britt was the natural pick to oversee the ballot box. At least his presence was a driving force in a good turnout. What’s the news? Was it an honest and fair election? Of course it was, and the new sheriff is… Britt Ponsett? But wait… there’s more, and you’ll want to listen in to see what trouble Britt has gotten himself into.
How can he resign from all his elected duties without turning the government to the shady element? It’s a matter of wits, rather than gunplay.
PS: Maybe he should have developed the platform of, “If nominated I won’t run. If elected I won’t serve.” He’s definitely ahead of his time.
