The old gents can often be silly, well
intended, and in the their later episodes sometimes a little critical of each other. Today’s episode is probably the most touching of their heart rendering moments.
Today Lum is still trying to promote his greeting card business, but first grandpap is in the store to share from the almanac. Can he teach Abner how to dance? Fortunately for Abner, Lum enters to rescue him from the dance steps.
To do a good service to the boys in the Armed Forces, Lum wants to print birthday greetings to send to them. He and Abner discuss the various local families who they might serve. When Lum phones the Blevins household to verify information, he gets bad news.
Wartime comes at a cost of uprooting young men and women to serve their country. In this case it has cost a local boy his life. Lum sounds the fire alarm on the party line to really the folks to support their fallen hero by buying more war bonds.
