New actors are on hand for the first time. Andy Devine is Mose Moots, and Opie Cates is himself to both lead the band, and add his own slow talking style to a character who is similar to Mousy Gray.
Abner tells Lum that a phone message came in, but Abner can’t remember who it was. Lum grills him, but no amount of pressure can spark a memory of who it could be, or what they wanted. Is it over a grudge for borrowing whitewash? Lum begins jumping to conclusions, and his paranoia over everybody, and everything grows.
Lum tries a little word association, as long as Abner has blanked out his mind. A misunderstanding with Luke Spears finds Lum hiring Lukes nephew from Clinton, Arkansas. It’s Opie, and the slow talking live wire of a newcomer puts a comic kink in Lum’s need for a fast paced answer to his questions.
Ben Withers visits, and his ideas of how to restore a memory turns the ongoing search for the nmystery caller to suspect it could be Mose Moots. Is the rascally barber after Lum’s girlfriend, Rowena? A confrontation ensues, and we are introduced to ,long time friend of Lum and Abner, Andy Devine. If the jovial barber isn’t Lum’s man, will he ever figure out who the caller was?
