The romancing of Miss Rowena continues when Lum sets out to do something special for her for Valentines day. To save money on a store bought card, Lum decides to make one himself.
Abner is less than helpful when he poisons Lum with paint thinner, as he is critical of Lum’s efforts, and even ruins his pants. Ben Withers enters. Fine. Does he know anything about first aid? A long distance phone call to Mt Ida costs Lum money when Ben manages to speak to everyone he can, before getting the antidote Lum needs after being poisoned by Abner.
Delays set in, the antidote turns out to be worse than the poison, will Lum ever make it to a hospital? A pit stop in Luke Spears lunch room is the setting for more delays to talk with Sister Simpson. The ever cantankerous Luke gets the gents fueled up. But not with Ethyl, he’s out of it.
When Lum is pulled over for speeding, Abner’s comments to the cop doesn’t help matters. Sitting in jail, Lum demands a lawyer, and gets Durwood Zincafoose. The lawyer, who is so eloquently spoken as he gets his words in a jumble only serves to rack up the fines and charges. Some defense lawyer. Where will the expense end? And all because Lum wanted to save 35 cents on a greeting card.
