A committee meeting is planned to vote on a new fire engine. Leroy is sure its not so much about the equipment, as being about a love interest between Charley the fire truck driver, and a girl he’s trying to impress. The meeting will be at Leila’s house, and Gildy goes early to spend a few personal moments with his lady friend,. Will Gildy help her play house? Huh? That expression took on some very racy overtones in the 1940’s. Is Leila going to be in trouble for hording? So unpatriotic!
The meeting starts, and Gildy tries to arrange a band. Judge suggests a play instead. sMrs Pettibone ramrods the show to get things organized her way. The petty and bickering adults end up with Marjorie sticking up for her stocky uncle, and storming out with hurt feelings.
Later, Gildy has decided to go on a diet. Even Leroy and Virdie notices the growing girth of the big man. Though his family is supportive of him, the adults in the social committee may be a different story. Amazingly, Mrs Pettibone gets everybody to also be supportive.
Will the committee be able to settle their differences, and come together on the matter of purchasing that much needed firetruck? Gildy is especially buttered up when he’s asked to sing, Drink to Me Only with Thine Eyes. Will it work?
