Working the day watch out of narcotics detail, Joe and Frankdeal with a teen age dope addict. Ed Field is a cop friend of Joe’s, and seems to be caring and an understanding parent along with his wife Helen. Finding drug parafenalia in their son’s room is nearly too much for them. Can Joe help them? What could’ve driven Gary to do such a thing? What made the parents suspect drugs?
Acting as mediator, Joe tries to keep heads calm as Gary enters to demand his “layout” back. The layout is the kit he uses to joy pop… Huh? Gotta love that 1950’s jive beatnik lingo. Hellen breaks down, Gary gets belligerent that his old man turned in his own son, but a trip to the hospital is made before making the trip to the police station.
After hauling Gary in, Joe sets out to find the supplier. Will he learn something from the high school, or any of Gary’s friends? After drying out, Gary’s senses return, and he’s both willing to be responsible for his actions, and to tell his story to Joe Friday. He has been a user, and a pusher, and tells all he knows. His long road to set things right has just begun, and Joe’s voiceover, we learn how the cops took down the drug ring.
