After his triumph in the previous episode at winning his appointment as Summerfield’s Water Commissioner, Gildy heads out, trying not to be late on his first day on the job. Along the way he meets Mrs Ransom, who is confused by what Gildy means by his hints at water. Then its off to the drug store to pick up some cigars from Peavey.
Finally at the office, Gildersleeve has his first run ins with snafu’s in the office. His secretary would play a big part in future episodes, but at this time she is played by Verna Felton, and is quite matronly and stern. Later she would resign, and the ditsie Bessie would rule the role. Gilda’s first responsibility is to collect on delinquent debts, and confront Judge Hooker who risks having his water shut off.
The newspaper editor from the previous episode has his own concerns for the Water Commissioner. Might there be saboteurs threatening the reservoir? Racing out to check it out, Gildy and Chief Charlie Bates indeed find intruders. The result is that Leroy is captured, skinny dipping in the towns drinking water.
Note: Sorry about the spoiler and telling the ending, but wasn’t it just snowing in Summerfield two episodes ago? There must have been a heat wave., One that was warm enough for swimming to be going on.
