Along the coastline of San Fransisco, Captain Friday relaxes at his Summer resort. Strangers approach on the property that was left to him by his aunt… queer. Accompanied by his Brittish friend, doc, Friday confronts the young couple at gun point. The cousins tell their story. They’re trying to evade a man in a long, dark overcoat. What graveyard did he excape from Doc wants to know.
Doc Simms, the doctor, mayor, and coroner of the small village is found dead. Andre and his cousin are sent away and assured not to worry. Now it’s time for Friday to put on his private investigator hat, and go to work. An enemy turns out to be the old skinflint uncle of the cousins we just met. The body is carried to the coroners office where another body is found. A body that has been shot through the heart.
The quiet weekend of relaxing has been turned upside down. A scream from Carmella sends Friday and Doc on the run. More bodies are reported, namely the uncle of Luis and Andrea. A murder, a death, and a suicide, all in one night could be more than just coincidence.
Though the sleepy little town has rolled up the sidewalks long ago, lights are on every cottage over all the commotion going on. Back at the morgue, Friday makes some conclusions as to the motive of the kilings. Who moved one of the bodies, and why? For safety, Friday takes the cousins to his place to spend the night. How safe will it be when Doc Simms is spotted running down the beach?
I have heard this one. It was engrossing. I couldn’t quite figure out what was going on — it was like an Agatha Christie novel, where you’ve got a couple of ideas but you can’t quite pick exactly where she’s going with it. Great stuff.
