The family do their part to support the war effort, and scrap drives. Things are tight with the new rationing, but Judge Hooker arrives with good news for Gildersleeve. To return the favor, the family decide to throw him a party, in honor of his service to the community. Will other prominent citezens be as supportive of the testimonial dinner? Quirky tidbits of bad blood among the pillars of society emerge. Will the affair be able to be kept secret from the judge?
At the newspaper office, Gildersleeve researches clippings of the judges past, and rumor somehow develops that Gildersleeve is going to run for the judges office. His fund raising efforts pick up steam, and soon the judge gets wind of the activity, nd the rumor.
Later, Gildersleeve goes over the menu of the dinner with Birdie. He shares other worries of thearrangements with Marjorie. Will there be trouble with that mobster, Beer Barrel, showing up? What kind of special gift can Leroy and Gildy get for the judge? Hooker still hasn’t learned of the secret honor at the dinner, but he suspects some conspiracy is afoot. How will the party be recieved by the judge?
Note: the character named Beer Barrel might ve recognized as Gildersleeve cellmate in the episode where he was to spend time in jail to expose scandal.
