A dinner guest is on the way after Gildersleeve recieves a phone call. The old college chum is only barely remembered, but the boisterous man does his best to dredge up those old memories. Mr Brown meets the family. What sports did they play together? How are their mutual friends doing these days? The guest begins to annoy Gildersleeve, but the schoolmate seems to be planning to stay around for a while.
Leroy and Marjorie have adopted the man as one of the family, but Gildy is feeling the burden of being eaten out of house and home. Later, Brown shares the secret of what really brought him to town. Is there a get rich quick scheme brewing? Leroy discovers a secret that changes everything.
The formal dinner party begins, and Gildersleeve has plans off his own to expose the con man. He may not be on the best of terms with Rosita Calahan, or judge Hooker, but he can’t stand by and let them be taken in as well. The stock in the manganese mine is phoney… right? A mine expert is in town who could make, or break Gildersleeve and his friends. There may not be manganese, but the expert has word that could save the day.
