An archaeologist studies the Anasasi indians, and finds death. Out in the desert, at an archaeology site, the old scientist, George anticipates the arrival of his niece and the man she is to marry. Suddenly a voice is heard echoing through the cavern, and the sudden shock at hearing the unearthly sound has given the old man’s heart a jolt. The younger man, Tim, goes to talk with Tony to talk about the scare. The two seem to have an ax to grind with the old scientist, for their own reasons.
Tony is the scientists doctor, and Tim is the junior scientist. Is Tony out to kill George? The sound of a rattlesnake is heard that appears to come right out of solid rock. Is the site haunted? Tim vows to do some ghost hunting to see what’s at the bottom of the odd events.
Back at base camp a man named Fraiser tells about Mattt, who went to town and is still there. The niece, Marian, pops in at the archaeology site to find nobody there, but Ken. All the rest have gone to get away from the ghosts. Marian and Ken discover the echoing caverns, the rattlesnake rattle, and an eerie voice echoing through the cavern. Is someone purposely trying to give the old man a heartattack?
A search party is organized to look for the missing Matt, and later Tim and Marian drive through the desert, and more of the plot twists emerge. Tim puts her on the spot for wanting to marry Dr Tony, then spots buzzards. A body is found under a rock slide. In digging out the clearly dead body, a roll of film is found, but it has been crushed by a falling rock. The body turns out to be Matt. Marian is distraught, but Tim declares that this was no accident. Tim points out the clues to prove his point.
Back in camp the news reaches George, and the shock sends him into cardiac arrest. The heart medicine only serves to make George worse and he dies of a heart attack. Now accusations are flying that someone switched medicine and George was murdered as well. Tim insists that Tony is guilty, but Fraiser only wants to comfort Marian while the sheriff gets on the scene.
Tim develops the film as he talks with Marian. What’s so interesting about the film that was found near the body? Why is Marian threatening Tim? Tim lays out all the clues to prove how the film and affects of the sun prove the details of Matt’s death. The killer cracks and admits what was done, and the inheritance that is potentially due to them.
