Paul shares part of his background in the first world war, and the love that he lost there while he was a pilot. Left to his thoughts, Paul writes his ideas down about the crumbling of the world in the past 30 years.
Back in Sea Cliff, California the rest of theBarbers talk about early beginnings between Henry and Fanny in the late 1890’s. Cousin Jeddiah X Barber gets confused as he remembers his days in the Yukon gold fields, and can’t get away from the topic as the family try to reflect on the new year. Will Claudia get the eccentric cousin’s mind off it by a walk outside? Over at Jack and Betty’s, the younger generation are tossing their own new years party, filled with music and dancing. The family talk about news from distant members,k Paul, Teddy, and Holly. Jeddiah is back with word on keeping Claudia and her husband, Nick apart. He also has another cablegram from Paul.
Across the sea, Paul finishes his poetic thoughts as Nicolette returns. She reads his moving words. With the same goal of locating Patricia Baldwin alive, their captors pass word that a plane to Istanbul is ready, and Paul is to head out on the next leg of his journey with Nicolette Moore.
