Showing off his mechanical prowess, Gildersleeve repairs Birdies old sewing machine. Leroy falls for the bragging, and tries to convince Marjorie that their uncle can repair anything. It leads to the great man being sweet talked into doing repair work for the Red Cross, on their automobiles.
There’s a mad dash around town to find a qualified mechanic who can bail Gildersleeve out. A sucker for a pretty face, Gildy can’t say no, or back down. It doesn’t help his case when judge Hooker pops in to embarrass Gildy’s class on his repair technique.
Gildersleeve actually seems to know car engines fairly well, but the girls have questions. Not to mention that he’s being put on the spot to actually make some repairs. As Gildy is stranded to play car mechanic, judge Hooker takes the ladies to tea. A passing company of Army troops might mean a little payback on Gildy’s behalf.
A special matter of a lost watch finds Getting more revenge on the judge, and getting out of blame for not fixing that car engine.
