Contrary to popular belief, Phil Harris is a hard working musician who demands perfection. Don’t believe it? Listen in to his band rehearsal. He is pulled aside when Alice has important news about Phillus. She has a boyfriend, at the ripe old age of 5 years old.
Side note: Phil is only a dumb hick because he’s written that way. When he flubs a line, he manages to think on his feet and recover in style. He doesn’t adlib any dumb jokes, just gets right back on track. In fact, the flub he makes early on in this episode, is almost not noticeable at all.
Back to the show. The new boyfriend is from a well off family, and his dad is a professer. Phil notices that Phillus seems ashamed of her dear old dad, and has been avoiding introducing her friend to him. Phil sings, The Jabberwocky Bird.
Remley and Phil talk about his predicament with the kids. The conversation turns sentimental, then Julius joins the fun. At the suggestion of Julius, Phil tries to use psychology on Phillus to learn why she is ashamed of him. Will it work?
Why is she ashamed anyway? Phil finds out it’s about his clothes, and out of love for his family, he decides to give the clothes all away. Alice sings, Love Somebody, but I Won’t Say Who.
The big moment comes to meet the boyfriend. The truth is revealed about the clothes, the issue of being ashamed, and the kids exchange engagement gifts as only kids can get away with.
